little things that can change the world
Here, I’m inviting you to a conversation about the fact that it does matter. We want the world to be a better place. We’ve walked down the street and thought, “If only they did what I can see that they should do, then the world would be a little better.”
In 1972, meteorologist Edward Lorenz presented a paper,
“Does the Flap of a Butterfly’s Wing in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?” While he didn’t really answer that question, this image has become an icon for the profound potential of small changes. One small action on our part can lead to a small action on our neighbor’s part, and thus the world can change.
A few months ago, as we took our water break at a retreat house that had provided cups and jugs of water, the presenting professor shared that her students refused to use their own cups in class on the theory that what they did didn’t matter.
